A brass instrument that points toward an unfulfilled promise, drawing its power from a freely offered memory.
- Ability
- Its needle reveals the direction of a promise its bearer still intends to keep.
- Limitation
- Each use consumes one chosen personal memory. It cannot recover the memory or guide a bearer who has abandoned the promise.
Lore notes
The compass has no north mark. Its glass is scratched, and the needle rests flat until its bearer recalls a promise and offers a memory. A small wheel beneath the case allows the bearer to stop before the memory is surrendered.
Oren carried it for years without telling Mara what he had paid. Its rules make every shortcut a decision: the compass can show a route the charts have lost, but the traveler must choose something of their own to leave behind.
